The MPS3000 series pulse radar level gauge is a "top-down" measurement system based on the time travel principle. This instrument emits 1mW low-power microwave pulses from the radar antenna (such as a 26G frequency radar, which sends a △ t-1nS pulse and superimposes a 26GHz sine wave signal). This pulse propagates at the speed of light in space, contacts the surface of the measured medium, and some of its energy is reflected back and received by the same antenna. The time interval between transmitting and receiving pulses is proportional to the distance from the antenna to the surface of the measured medium.
